There are many articles on the ideal length of a blog post.
According to HubSpot, the ideal length of a blog post is 2,100-2,400 words.
But in every niche, there will be some topics which could be covered in a few hundred words.
If you are writing on such a topic, you might have definitely wondered how short can a blog post be?
You might have also pondered whether these short blog posts can rank well on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) or not?
In this article, I have covered all these aspects.
So read on.
The minimum blog post length should be 300 words and never be smaller than that.
This is because even a tweet can be of 280 characters and blog posts are assumed to be lengthier than a tweet, so always aim to write more than 300 words.
Now, as you got your answer, you might be tempted to abandon reading this blog post.
But hold up, I will tell you how you can rank the short blog posts well in the later section of this blog post.
In every niche, there will be some smaller topics on which lengthy blog posts of thousands of words couldn’t be written.
But you might have read many articles that say that to rank well, you must always write lengthier blog posts of thousands of words.
So, in this case you might get thoughts like-
- To increase the length of your blog post by adding fluff. But both readers and search engines hate this.
- Abandon writing on these topics because you have previously read that short blog posts can’t rank well.
But both the above thoughts are wrong.
You can definitely rank your short blog post well.
In the section below I will prove that a short blog post can rank well on Google SERP.
A short blog post can rank well-
After learning that a blog post shouldn’t necessarily be of several thousand words, I wrote and published a short blog post.
It was on a topic which can be fully covered in a few hundred words.
And the topic was- Not all recommended security headers are installed.
If you are using WordPress as your content management system (CMS), you would have certainly come across Not all recommended security headers are installed message on your WordPress dashboard.
So, I wrote an article to resolve this issue and this article was of only 371 words.
In just 371 words, I was able to fulfill the searchers’ intent.
In this article, I not only guided readers how to install the security headers but also mentioned a method to check if they got successfully installed.
To my surprise, this blog post got in the top third-fourth position in the Google SERP within a couple of days and is still maintaining this position.
When can a short blog post rank well?
A short blog post can rank really well if it can completely fulfill the searcher’s intent.
This short blog post can rank well even if there are a few lengthy blog posts on the same topic which don’t properly satisfy the searchers’ intent.
Also, you should ensure that there isn’t too much competition, there must not be many blog posts on the topic on which you are planning to write a short blog post.
The easiest way to analyse the competition, is to search by typing- allintitle: “your blog post topic” in Google and then, look at the number of results.
If there are only a handful of results, then your short blog post has high chances of ranking well.
My blog post on the topic of Not all recommended security headers had only around 7 results.
Thanks to this low competition, my blog post has been able to rank really well.
When can’t a short blog post rank well?
If you are planning to write a short blog post but there are many lengthy blog posts on that topic and that are fulfilling the readers’ intent and also answering many potential questions which they might have on the topic.
In these cases, your short blog post can’t rank well.
So, you should write a lengthy blog post.
And in your blog post, you should cover the topic in more detail than your competitors.
This is why it is important to analyse the competition of your blog post topic even before starting to write, this gives you an idea of how long your blog post should be and the number of subtopics which you need to cover to rank well.
If you write an article without analysing the competition, your blog post will have a hard time ranking.
There will be a few topics on which lengthy blog posts can’t be written.
In these cases, you can go ahead and publish short blog posts but you should keep in mind to completely satisfy the readers’ intent.
This article also lifts off stress from your shoulders as by now you must have realised that there is no need to add fluff to your articles to increase the total word count in hopes of getting good rankings on SERPs.
So, will you publish shorter blog posts on your blog?
