Almost every blogger who gets approved into the AdSense program wants to know the correct number of AdSense ads that can be displayed in a blog post.

The short answer-
According to the current AdSense guidelines, you can place as many ads as you like in your blog post.
But the number of ads must be proportional to the length of your article.
Now, the AdSense policy allows you to place an unlimited number of ads in your blog posts.
This doesn’t mean that you can jam your blog posts with an excessive number of ads.
AdSense has provided some guidelines to follow to insert the correct number of ads in your articles.
In any case, the content of your blog post must be greater than ads and other promotional material.
This means the total number of AdSense ads, ads of other advertising networks like Media.net, Taboola Native Advertising, etc. and promotional material (like affiliate links, etc.) should not be greater than the content of your article.
If you insert too many ads on a blog post with very less content, you might face problems like limited or disabled ad serving.
There are no guidelines mentioning the exact number of ads to be displayed on blog posts of specific lengths.
So, in this section, I will tell you the approximate number of ads which you can display in the blog posts of varied lengths by keeping user experience in mind.
For a short blog post of less than 500 words, you can display one or two ads.
If your blog post has in between 500 to 1000 words, you can display two to three ads.
If your article is 1000 to 1500 words long, you can show four ads on it.
For a lengthy article of more than 2000 words, display ads accordingly like six to seven ads.
So, the number of ads that you can display is directly proportional to the length of your blog posts.
You should insert ads in the places of your blog where there is good viewability like in the beginning of the blog post, etc.
And you can distribute your ads in different positions of your blog like header, sidebar, in-content (between the content), footer, etc.
The 3-ads-per-page limit-
Earlier, AdSense only permitted three ads per page for normal publishers whereas premium partners were allowed to display six ads.
According to this Ad limit per page rule, publishers were allowed to place up to three AdSense for content units, up to three link units and up to two search boxes.
Publishers were allowed to place only one “large” ad unit per page.
A “large” ad unit referred to an unit resembling 300×600 format.
But this rule was lifted in 2016.
Lengthy blog posts-
Earlier the 3-ads-per-page limit made sense because in those days, the blog posts were short with only a few hundred words.
So, this rule to not show more than three ads per page ensured that the blog posts were not riddled with too many ads.
But eventually, the blog posts started to become more lengthy and comprehensive.
According to a study conducted by HubSpot, now the median length of blog posts is 2,164 words.
The effect of smartphones-
The growing popularity and usage of smartphones also made the three ads per page rule irrelevant.
In earlier times, the three ads per page rule was very relevant because the majority of the web traffic was from computers.
A short blog post used to completely fit on a desktop screen, so displaying more than three ads seemed replete.
Eventually, the length of the blog posts grew and the mobile phones started to become popular.
Scrolling is a common practice in mobile devices and as the screen of the mobile devices are not as big as desktops, a reader can see only a small part of a blog post at a time.
And to finish reading a blog post, he has to scroll it many times and so, many ads can be displayed to him.
This will also not degrade the user experience, as he only sees very few ads (usually one ad) per scroll.
To improve the quality-
The publishers were circumventing the three ads per page rule by breaking a blog post into multiple slideshows and displaying more ads by this method.
Although the publishers were able to earn more by this method, the user experience took a hit.
So, the ad limit rule was ruled off to encourage the publishers to not break a single piece of content into multiple slideshows and enhance the quality of content and user experience.
Thanks to all these developments, AdSense allowed its publishers to display more than three ads.
Everyone benefited from this as the publishers and Google are able to earn more through displaying more advertisements while providing users with high quality content.
The perfect balance-
You must always exercise a right balance to display the right amount of ads at the various growth stages of your website or blog.
If you display too many ads in the initial stages of your website, this will overwhelm your blog readers.
As a result of this bad experience, they might exit (bounce) your blog and this will negatively affect your rankings and blog growth.
Finally, your blog will attract less visitors and you will make very little money.
In another scenario, if your blog is somewhat established and attracts a decent number of readers to it and if you display very few ads on it, you are leaving money on the table.
So, when your blog is more established, you can display a reasonable amount of ads in it but always remember to not go overboard.

You should be displaying ads on your blog when you receive at least a thousand page views per month.
If you display ads before this, you will earn very little from your blog and this might demotivate you.
