Are you planning to blog anonymously and wondering how to be an anonymous blogger?
As a blog is an online website, anyone can know about you from any part of the world anytime.
If this scares you, you need not worry because here, I will help you to stay completely anonymous.
Additionally, I will also explain various strategies to succeed as an anonymous blogger.
So read on.
Don’t use your full name-
It is impossible to stay anonymous when you use your full name on your blog.
So, instead of using your full name, you can use your first name only.
If you are uncomfortable with using your first name, you can use a shortened version of your name.
For example, if your first name is James, you can call yourself Jim.
Or if you are Jennifer, you can shorten it to Jenny or Jenn.
Use a pseudonym-
Using a fictitious or pen name on your blog helps in your anonymity.
Make sure that you have not used this pen name before.
Use your creativity to come up with an unique pen name but stay away from using your nicknames.
Create a persona of yourself-
You can create a persona of yourself and name it.
You can tell your stories and experiences using that name.
Also, having a persona helps your readers to better connect with your persona (indirectly with you) and blog.
Prefer domain privacy protection-
While purchasing a domain name for your blog, you will be asked to provide your first name, last name, country, street address, city, state/province, pincode, phone number, email address, etc.
All this information will be publicly available through Whois if you don’t pay for domain privacy protection.
Usually, domain privacy protection comes as an add on while purchasing a domain and it helps you to hide your personal information from the world.
When you purchase domain privacy protection, the contact information of your domain registrar will be displayed instead of yours.
And if someone sends you an email, that email will be forwarded to you.
This ensures that people can interact with you through email even without knowing your original email.
If you purchased a domain name without domain privacy protection, you can always purchase it from your domain registrar anytime you want.
If you think that you can mask your identity by providing wrong information while purchasing a domain, please don’t do it because your domain name registration might get suspended or even cancelled.
If you are using WordPress as your content management system (CMS), then you should do a few things to stay anonymous.
Login to your WordPress dashboard and head over to your profile settings.
Make sure that you are not using your real name in First Name, Last Name, Nickname and Display name publicly as fields.
Also make sure that you are not using your personal email in the email fields both in General settings and Profile settings.
Be careful with images-
It is rightly said that a picture is worth a thousand words.
If you are careless with the images that you upload on your blog, you could completely reveal your identity.
So, you should never use your personal photographs on your blog.
Also, don’t use any photos which you have previously shared on social media or your other blogs.
You should also never use the images of your family members, friends, home, neighbourhood, etc. on your blog.
Because if you use any one of them, people can easily perform a reverse image search on Google and find that those images relate to you and can know that you are the blogger behind your anonymous blog.
So, design custom images for using on your blog.
Email and social media-
Be sure to not use your personal email for your anonymous blog.
Create a new email account for your anonymous blog and use it only for your blog.
You should use this email to purchase the domain name and hosting for your blog.
Also, don’t use your personal social media accounts for your blog.
Create new social media channels for your blog and use them only for your blog purposes.
You should use only these social media accounts to promote your anonymous blog.
Use a VPN-
You can use a virtual private network (VPN) while blogging to stay completely private.
Even when you are blogging using a public Wi-Fi, VPN keeps your data private.
Don’t backlink to your public website-
If you repeatedly backlink from your anonymous blog to your public website or blog, it will reveal your identity.
Set up an anonymous LLC-
As an anonymous blogger, you might be worried about expanding.
Luckily, you can start a limited liability company (LLC) without having your name disclosed publicly.
You should always check whether or not your state/country allows anonymous LLCs.
When should you blog anonymously?
- If you are planning to become a blogger but worried about revealing your identity.
- If you are an introvert and feel uncomfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings through your blog.
- If you think that you might get fired from your job for blogging.
- When you feel that you might receive hate for blogging on controversial topics.
- If you blog on sensitive issues.
- If you are not confident with your blog.
- When you think you might face security and privacy issues.
- If you fear that people might treat or think of you differently for blogging about certain topic(s).
- If you think that you can’t express yourself and your creativity fully when you blog publicly.
- If you fear that people might judge you or your capabilities when you blog publicly.
- If blogging publicly poses a risk to you and the people whom you mention in your blog.
Effect on SEO-
Blogging anonymously can have a negative effect on Search engine optimization (SEO), thanks to E-A-T: Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness guidelines of Google.
You can easily fulfill E-A-T if you blog publicly.
In order to improve your blog’s E-A-T, it is recommended to have your name and byline in your blog posts.
Also, having a good bio page with your full name, headshot, detailed bio, etc. helps.
But this is difficult to do with an anonymous blog.
Can anonymous bloggers become successful?
Yes, you can definitely succeed as an anonymous blogger.
But it is somewhat difficult and time consuming to succeed as an anonymous blogger compared to when you blog publicly.
When you blog publicly, people see your face, relate and connect to you and follow you more.
Also, when you blog publicly, it is easy to build a community and you can easily promote your products and services and other blogs and other businesses like YouTube channels, podcasts, etc.
You can also arrange meetups with your blog readers.
But as an anonymous blogger, you can’t have all these advantages.
Can anonymous blogs make money?
Yes, you can make money with your anonymous blog.
Much like any regular blog, you can earn through displaying advertisements, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, selling your own products, etc.
But unlike regular blogs you cannot accept speaking opportunities like speaking at events and conferences, consulting, awards, book deals, media coverage, etc. because this will reveal your identity.
If you can’t handle criticism and are thinking that starting an anonymous blog will help.
You should think again because blogging anonymously will not shield you from receiving criticisms, you will still feel sad when you receive criticisms for your pen name or blog.
So, you should work on developing a thick skin.
Even if you start out as an anonymous blogger, at any point of time you can add your personality to your blog and can add your name and photographs to your blog.
What did I do?
When I first started out, I too felt uncomfortable and overwhelmed to put my name and picture on my first blog.
Eventually, after a few months, I became more comfortable to put my details on my blog.
First, I displayed my full name in the author field of my blog posts.
Then, I added my author bio at the end of blog posts.
